As you may have heard, we recently announced our plans to green the electricity usage of the City of Pittsburgh during both days of the G-20 Summit, Sept. 24-25, 2009.  Pittsburgh is our home—and has been for more than 20 years. As the city steps into the international spotlight, we wanted to help Pittsburgh shine—sustainably—and demonstrate that Pittsburgh is a clean, green city committed to protecting the environment.

We will be securing Green-e Energy certified Renewable Energy Credits, or RECs, generated from renewable energy sources located in Pennsylvania and Texas. During the two days of the Summit, the environmental impact of Pittsburgh’s electricity consumption will be “offset” by our purchase of RECs, one of the easiest and most effective methods for supporting the development of new, renewable energy technologies.

As Congress debates on how the United States can best manage its domestic carbon emissions and attempts to secure the framework for national legislation, the topic of protecting the environment is at the political forefront. However, businesses across the country have already made the choice to voluntarily reduce the environmental impact of their own business practices by purchasing RECs. Direct Energy Business supports these voluntary efforts by offering renewable energy products and programs to help companies and organizations fulfill their individual sustainability initiatives. And, by greening up Pittsburgh during an international event, we hope to heighten awareness of renewable energy options and encourage other companies to pursue their own sustainability programs.

This announcement follows our one-year anniversary as Direct Energy Business, where we celebrated with Governor Edward G. Rendell, Secretary of the Department of Environmental Protection, John Hanger, and Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission Chairman Jim Cawley. At this event, we announced our five-year, $2.5 million Committed to Pennsylvania initiative and our expanded Pennsylvania operations.
